Permanent Residence in Serbia

Home - Permanent Residence in Serbia

How to get permanent residence

A foreign national can apply for permanent residence in Serbia after three years of continuous lawful residence on the basis of an approved temporary residence permit or a single permit for residence and work, provided the other statutory conditions are met.

Permanent residence is not a starting point and it cannot be applied for from abroad. It is the step that follows a life already established here, and everything depends on one word in that sentence: continuous. Three years of permits with a gap in the middle is not three years of continuous residence.

That is why the extensions along the way are not administration. They are the plan. People who lose permanent residence usually lose it years earlier, by filing an extension two weeks late.

What the three years have to look like

Before you apply, this is what we go through with you, year by year.

Three years of residence

Counted from approved temporary residence or an approved single permit, not from your first day in the country.

No gaps between permits

Every extension filed on time. A lapsed permit is the most common reason the count starts again.

A registered address throughout

Address registration follows you every time you move. It is part of the record the authorities look at.

Documents and translation

Papers issued abroad may need certified translation and an apostille, and the ones that take longest are worth starting first.

A settled status

Permanent residence removes the yearly cycle of extensions and the anxiety that comes with it.

Citizenship is separate

Permanent residence and citizenship are two different legal statuses, with different conditions.

How we run the application

The first step is not paperwork, it is arithmetic. We reconstruct your residence history before anything is prepared.

Our guide on the three year path from temporary to permanent residence explains what continuity means in practice and the mistake that costs people the whole count.

Every part of the period covered by a valid permit, one following the other without a break. Changing the ground of stay along the way, for example from employment to family reunification, does not have to break the chain, but a period with no valid permit does.

Yes. Time spent on an approved single permit for residence and work counts towards the period of continuous lawful residence, the same as time on temporary residence.

No. Permanent residence and citizenship are two different legal statuses. Permanent residence can be an important step in regulating your status in the long term, but citizenship has its own statutory conditions that have to be met separately.

It has to be looked at case by case, and the honest answer is that a break can cost you the count. That is why the first thing we do is reconstruct your history from the actual documents rather than from memory, so you know where you stand before you invest in an application.

Yes. Your registered address should always reflect where you actually live, and a change of address is registered when you move. It stays part of keeping a clean record in Serbia.
