White Card and Address Registration in Serbia

Home - White Card and Address Registration

What is the white card

The white card is the name used in practice for the registration of a foreign national’s stay in Serbia. A foreign national is obliged to register their stay within 24 hours of entering the Republic of Serbia.

The name is informal, but everyone here uses it, and you will be asked for it. It is the confirmation that your address of stay has been registered, and it is a separate obligation from your residence permit. Holding a permit does not remove the need to register your address.

The deadline is the part people underestimate. Twenty four hours starts running the moment you cross the border, and it applies whether you are here for three days or three years. It is also the first thing every later procedure rests on, from temporary residence to an extension, so a stay that was never registered quietly becomes a problem months later.

Address registration and white card in Serbia

Who registers your stay

It depends on where you are staying, and that is where most of the confusion comes from.

Within 24 hours of entry

The deadline runs from the moment you cross the border, not from the day you settle in.

Hotels register you

If you stay in a hotel or other registered accommodation, the provider normally registers your stay for you.

A private apartment is on you

Renting privately or staying with friends means the registration has to be arranged separately. This is where people get caught.

What you bring

Your passport and proof of the address where you are staying, usually the lease or the owner's documents.

Every move is registered again

Change your address and the new one is registered too. Your registration should always match where you actually live.

Everything else rests on it

Temporary residence, the single permit and every extension rely on your stay being properly registered.

How we handle it for you

It is a short procedure, but it has a deadline, so it is worth arranging before you land rather than after.

If you are arriving soon, our checklist for the first year in Serbia puts the registration in order with everything else that follows it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the white card in Serbia?

It is the informal name for the registration of a foreign national’s stay, the confirmation that your address in Serbia has been registered with the authorities. Every foreign national has to register their stay within 24 hours of entering the country.

You still need the registration, but you usually do not have to arrange it yourself. Hotels and other registered accommodation providers normally register their guests. Ask at reception for the confirmation and keep it, because you may be asked for it later.

Then the registration has to be arranged separately, and it involves the person providing the accommodation as well as you. This is the situation where most people are caught out, usually without realising there was anything to do. We coordinate it with your landlord or host.

Registering late is a breach of the obligation, and the practical consequence usually shows up later, when a residence application or an extension has to rest on a clean record of your stay. If you are already past the deadline, do not leave it. Get it registered and let us look at how it affects what comes next.

No. They are two different things. The white card registers where you are staying. A temporary residence permit gives you the right to stay in Serbia beyond the period a visa or visa free entry allows. You need both, and the permit application relies on the registration.

Yes. When you change address, the new address is registered as well. Your registration should reflect where you actually live, and keeping it current is part of maintaining a clean residence record in Serbia.
